The Buccaneers became an NFL member in 1976 as one of the AFC West division. They moved to NFC central a year later in the league’s realignment. A contest was announced in naming the team and resulted in the nickname “Buccaneers”, which is dedicated to the yearly Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa. Originally owned by Tom McCloskey from Philadelphia, the team was then taken over by Hugh Culverhouse after McCloskey suffered from financial problems.
